Sir Richard Fanshawe (* Ware Park, Hertfordshire (INglaterra); junio de 1608 – † Madrid (España); 16 de junio de 1666), diplomático, traductor, poeta e hispanista inglés.

Hijo de sir Henry Fanshawe y de Elizabeth, hija de Thomas Smith o de Smythe, fue educado en Cripplegate por el famoso profesor Thomas Farnaby; fue admitido en Cambridge en noviembre de 1623. Viajó por Francia y España, donde trabó amistad con el Embajador de Inglaterra en España lord Walter Aston, 1º Lord Aston of Forfar en 1627, (Staffordshire, 9 July 1584 – 13 August 1639) hijo de Sir Edward Aston of Tixall y Anne Lucy of Cherlecote, un "Squire" de la pequeña nobleza rural venida a menos bajo los Tudor, al haber estado en 1485 en la Batalla de Bosworth Field de 1485 del lado del últimno "Plantagenet" Ricardo III de Inglaterra.

El Embajador Walter Aston, (hijo del "Squire" rural Edward, título aproximadamente equivalente al de una especie de hijosdalgo rural español) había comenzado su ascenso social como Caballero de la Orden del Baño sin embargo en la Coronación de James I Stuart de Escocia, Jacobo I de Escocia, como Rey de Inglaterra y en 1611 fue nombrado Baronet ("Barón" en español).

En 1622, Sir Walter Aston tomó parte en los intentos de búsqueda para Jacobo I de Escocia y de Inglaterra de una novia que fuera una Infanta Real Española Católica en España - Portugal para su hijo primogénito Charles, Príncipe de Gales, luego Rey Carlos I de Inglaterra,

El Rey Carlos I de Inglaterra, (Dunfermline, Escocia, 19 de noviembre de 1600 – Palacio de Whitehall, Londres, 30 de enero de 1649), acabaría decapitado en el cadalso en 1649 por las tropas de los "Round-Heads", ("Cabezas Redondas"), del revolucionario pre-ilustrado, 140 años antes de la decapitación del Rey Francés Luis XVI, Oliver Cromwell, (Huntingdon, Inglaterra, 25 de abril de 1599 - Londres, 3 de septiembre de 1658).

Los servicios diplomáticos del modesto Barón Walter Aston serían recompensados en 28 de noviembre de 1627 con el título de Lord Aston of Forfar. Muerto Walter Sr. in 1639, le sucedió en el título su hijo Walter Aston Jr., 2º Lord Aston of Forfar.

Fue Richard Fanshawe quien sirvió como secretario de cartas latinas al Embajador Aston en 1635 en España. Las memorias de su esposa, conocida como "Lady Anne Fanshawe", son un importante documento de viajes en, y opiniones sobre, la anquilosada Sociedad Española de mediados del Siglo XVII.

Durante la Revolución inglesa, Richard Fanshawe fue partidario del rey, en cuyo nombre realizó muchas gestiones diplomáticas. Prisionero en la batalla de Worcester (1651), recobró la libertad a la muerte de Oliver Cromwell.

Fue después embajador de Carlos II de Inglaterra, (29 de mayo de 1630 - Rey desde mayo de 1660 por extinción de la I República Inglesa - 6 de febrero de 1685) en Lisboa y en Madrid, muriendo en Madrid en junio de 1666. Por supuesto, pintores como Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquez, (Sevilla, 6 de junio de 1599 – Madrid, 6 de agosto de 1660), su suegro Francisco Pacheco o su yerno Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, los escultores andaluces Pedro Roldán, (1624 - 1699), y su hija Luisa Roldán, (1652 - 1706), o el diplomático en España y pintor Pedro Pablo Rubens, (Siegen, actual Alemania, 29 de junio de 1577 - Amberes, actual Bélgica, 30 de mayo de 1640), no fueron ajenos a los contactos sociales en Madrid de Richard y Anne.

Hay un retrato suyo atribuido a Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez. Como hispanista se le recuerda por haber traducido a Luis de Góngora, (1561 - 1627), y dos comedias de Antonio de Mendoza en 1654, que fueron publicadas tras su muerte. También tradujo Il pastor Fido de Guarini (1647), algunas obras de Horacio (1652) y Os Lusiadas, de Luís de Camões, (Junio de 1524 - Junio de 1580), (1655).

Su esposa, nacida Anne Harrison, " Lady Anne Fanshawe ", (1625 - 1680), escribió memorias de su vida. Aunque tuvo catorce hijos, sólo le sobrevivieron cinco y heredó el mayorazgo Richard, segundo baronet, fallecido en 1694.
