Squib

En el mundo de ficción de los libros de Harry Potter, es considerado un squib una persona no mágica que nace de padres magos. Es lo contrario a un mago nacido de padres muggles, sólo que los squibs son casos muy poco comunes. Suelen sufrir mucho pues de una u otra manera pertenecen a la comunidad mágica, pero al no poder hacer magia se ven atrapados entre dos mundos.

Ejemplos de squibs son el conserje de Colegio Hogwarts de Magia y Hechicería Argus Filch; Arabella Figg, vecina de los Dursley y Marius Black (suprimido del Árbol Genealógico de los Black por este motivo).

La familia de Neville Longbottom llegó a pensar que era un squib durante años pero finalmente resultó no ser cierto. Lo mismo sucedió con Merope Gaunt, la madre de Voldemort, quien parecía no tener poderes mágicos, aunque en realidad no los utilizaba debido al maltrato de su padre Marvolo Gaunt. Otro caso es el de Ariana Dumbledore, considerada por muchas personas (entre ellas la tía Muriel) una squib ocultada por su madre por vergüenza.

Los squibs, al no ser capaces de hacer magia, no pueden asistir a Hogwarts. No obstante, como en el caso de Filch, sí suelen tener un vínculo con el mundo mágico. Al parecer, unos años atrás los squibs se consideraban unos marginados y por lo general, eran enviados a colegios muggles, donde podrían sentirse más integrados.
