The Animals fue un grupo de música británico formado por su líder y vocalista Eric Burdon, el teclista Alan Price, el guitarrista Hilton Valentine, el batería John Steel y el bajista Chas Chandler. Adquirieron fama en los 60 gracias a su estilo de blues eléctrico y a la canción The house of rising sun.

Historia

Década de 1960

Originarios de la portuaria Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Inglaterra), el grupo The Animals nació en 1962 cuando Eric Burdon llegó al grupo Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo y le cambió el nombre por el que sería conocido mundialmente. La música se basó, esencialmente, en el blues e hizo versiones de canciones de John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Nina Simone y Jimmy Reed.

El grupo gestionó ese mismo año su propio EP y el éxito en su localidad natal fue tan notorio que Giorgio Gomelsky -mánager de Yardbirds- les convenció para que se instalaran en Londres en 1964. Durante un tiempo tocaron en Crawdaddy Club -el local del propio Gomelsky- y allí conocieron al que sería su productor: Mickie Most. Con él firmaron su primer contrato discográfico (que fue con la discográfica EMI) y en febrero de 1964 grabaron su primer single: Baby, let me take you home (una versión de Baby, let me follow you down de Bob Dylan). La versión llegó al puesto 21º de las listas británicas.

No tardaron en versionar otra canción de Bob Dylan y fue ésta la que les lanzó a la fama: The house of rising sun. Gracias a ésta se convirtieron en el segundo grupo inglés en conseguir el número uno tanto en las listas británicas como en las estadounidenses, pues los primeros habían sido los míticos The Beatles. Tanto fue así que, a finales de 1964, se editó The Animals, su primer LP. En él se encontraban canciones como I'm crying (número 8 en el Reino Unido), Don't let me be misunderstood (número 3 en las listas británicas) o We've gotta get out of this place (número 2 en el Reino Unido). Y, entonces, llegó su segundo álbum: Animal Tracks.

En mayo de 1965 Alan Price abandona la banda por motivos personales, de salud (tenía pánico a volar) y por la lucha por el liderazgo que mantenía con su compañero Eric Burdon. Fue Dave Rowberry quién le sustituyó. Pero, la situación del resto del grupo tampoco fue mucho mejor. Los componentes de la banda empezaron a tener la sensación que su música se estaba transformando en algo demasiado comercial (debido principalmente a las exigencias de Mike Frost y de la propia EMI Music) y a principios de 1966 rompieron su contrato con EMI y con Frost, no sin antes dejar otro éxito: It's my life, número 7 en las listas británicas y el 23 en las estadounidenses.

En 1966 el grupo firmó un contrato con la discográfica Decca/London Records. En el mes de marzo, el batería John Steel dejó el grupo y fue sustutído por Barry Jenkins. De todas maneras, la salida de éste fue un preludio de lo que pasó poco después. Aunque era cierto que editaron un único disco con esta discográfica titulado Animalism (junio de 1966) y que paralelamente EMI lanzó los grandes éxitos de la banda (uno de los más vendidos de la época), el grupo originario tan sólo sobrevivió a la salida de Steel seis meses. The Animals se disolvió en septiembre de 1966.

En 1967, Eric Burdon intentó reformar la banda bajo el nombre de Eric Burdon and The Animals, que tuvo canciones de éxito moderado como When I was young, Monterey o San Franciscan Nights, dando un nuevo aire al grupo en plena época de la psicodelia. Al lado de Burdon, Barry Jenkins estaba a cargo de la batería, John Weider de la guitarra y el violín, Danny McCulloch del bajo y Vic Briggs al de guitarra. Una formación que sufrió múltiples cambios a finales de 1968, cuando Briggs y McCulloch abandonaran la formación y fueran sustituidos por Zoot Money y por el guitarrista Andy Summers (integrante en años posteriores del exitoso trío Police). En 1969 publicaron un doble álbum llamado Love, con su último éxito: Sky Pilot (Primera Parte). Eric Burdon puso fin a esta banda a finales de 1969.

Década de 1970

Los miembros originales de la banda se volvieron a reunir en 1977 para grabar Before we were so rudely interrupted.

Década de 1980

En 1983 volvieron a reunirse para los discos Ark y Rip it to shreds.

Década de 1990

En 1994, el grupo originario entró en el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll. Poco después, en julio de 1996, el bajista de la primera formación, Chas Chandler, falleció. Valentine, Steel, y Dave Rowberry también hicieron giras con (Hilton Valentine's) The Animals y Valentine y Steel con el nombre de Animals II.

Década de 2000

Eric Burdon dio la vuelta al mundo con un grupo de músicos bajo el nombre de Eric Burdon and the Animals.
