Poco después del lanzamiento de The Long Play, que alcanzó el top 20 en su país natal (Alemania), Sandra se mudó a Londres por seis meses. Helena Shelen, una terapista de canto que había trabajado con artistas como George Michael y Paul Young, la tomó bajo su cuidado. Asimismo, Sandra se inscribió en la London Berlitz School of Languages, donde mejoró su inglés y donde tomó lecciones de percusión para tener mejor sentido del ritmo y el tempo. En los fines de semana la cantante volvía a Múnich para trabajar en su siguiente álbum, el que llevaría el título Mirrors.

Sencillos

El sencillo «(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena» lideró las listas en 21 países, al tiempo que entraba en los top 10 de otros cinco países. La canción estaba dirigida al mercado continental europeo, así que nunca se grabó un vídeo promocional para la canción (en Europa, las apariciones personales resultaban ser un método más efectivo de promoción de los discos hasta principios de los 90). Aunque «(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena» ya había sido número uno en algunos países europeos, le tomó algún tiempo hacer los mismo en Alemania, donde permaneció en los top 20 por 16 semanas. En Suecia llegó a ser el sencillo más vendido de su historia. También llegó a ser nº 1 en Sudáfrica.

El siguiente sencillo del álbum fue «In the Heat of the Night». En su primer video musical, Sandra se presentaba en una sauna repleta de hombres semi-desnudos y sudorosos. Aunque la canción ascendió rápidamente al número uno en Suiza, Líbano e Israel, estuvo en el número dos en Alemania por un par semanas, siendo incapaz de superar a la canción «Nikita» de Elton John. En todo caso, «In the Heat of the Night» le dio a Sandra la segunda posición en el Festival de Música de Tokio más tarde en 1986.

«Little Girl» fue el tercer sencillo extraído del álbum, con vídeo musical filmado enteramente en escenarios de Venecia.

«Sisters and Brothers» fue publicado en 1988 como sencillo promocional solamente en Japón. La canción apareció en su álbum de debut The Long Play y también como cara B del tercer sencillo del álbum, «Little Girl». «Sisters and Brothers» era una versión de una canción de Michael Cretu incluida en su álbum en solitario de 1983 Legionäre. Sandra dedicó este tema a su hermano Gaston (que fallecería posteriormente en 1995).
