Time Takes Time es el primer álbum de estudio de Ringo Starr desde que en 1983 publicara Old Wave. Supone, asimismo, el regreso al mundo musical de Ringo tras una gira mundial con su All-Starr Band entre 1989 y 1990 y casi una década apartado del trabajo por su adicción al alcohol.

Con el fin de crear un álbum contemporáneo con un sonido más honesto, Ringo Starr se unió a Don Was, Peter Asher, Phil Ramone y Jeff Lynne en la producción. Además, Time Takes Time supone la primera alianza con Mark Hudson, encargado de la producción de sus discos de estudio hasta la fecha y miembro del grupo "The Roundheads", creado por Ringo junto a otros compañeros.

Grabado de forma esporádica, mayoritariamente en 1991, y predominando los temas compuestos por otros músicos, Time Takes Time incluye invitados de excepción como Jeff Lynne, Brian Wilson y Harry Nilsson.

Mientras unos críticos consideran Time Takes Time como el mejor trabajo musical de Ringo desde que en 1973 editara el álbum Ringo y otros le concedían el mérito de ser un notable y trabajado disco, fue recibido de forma tibia por el público, lo que hizo que no entrara en las listas de éxitos. De todos modos, el single "Weight Of The World" alcanzó el puesto #74 en el Reino Unido, siendo el primer single de Ringo que entra en las listas desde "Only You (And You Alone)" en 1974.
