USS; abreviatura de la expresión inglesa "United States Ship", que en español se traduce como "Buque de los Estados Unidos". Se trata de un acrónimo que se antepone al nombre o número de identificación de todos los buques de la Armada de Estados Unidos, tal como en el caso de los navíos de guerra británicos se utiliza el acrónimo HMS (Her Majesty Ship), en barcos italianos usan la MM (Marina Militare), en los argentinos, ARA (Armada de la República Argentina) o en en los peruanos, BAP (Buque de la Armada Peruana).

Así, en referencias formales, un buque de guerra estadounidense no se consigna, por ejemplo, Maine a secas, sino USS Maine.

Anteriormente, durante parte del siglo XIX, la armada estadounidense utilizó acrónicos específicos para ciertos tipos de barcos, como "USF" ("United States Frigate") para el caso de las fragatas, o "USFS" ("United States Flagship") tratándose de un buque insignia de una flota.

Durante la Guerra Civil de Estados Unidos los barcos sureños utilizaron el acrónimo CSS, "Confederate States Ship" o "Buque de los Estados Confederados", mientras que las unidades norteñas conservaron la designación USS.

Uso en ficción: Star Trek

En la serie de ciencia ficción Star Trek (Viaje a las Estrellas) las siglas USS que preceden a los nombres de las naves estelares (como la USS Enterprise) corresponden a United Star Ship (Nave Estelar de la Unión, de la Federación de Planetas Unidos).
