Asymptote es un lenguaje de gráficos vectoriales descriptivo, desarrollado por Andy Hammerlindl, John C. Bowman (Universidad de Alberta), y Tom Prince, que brinda un entorno natural basado en coordenadas para dibujo técnico.

Sintaxis y características destacables

Las etiquetas y ecuaciones se componen tipográficamente con LaTeX, para salida PostScript de alta calidad. Está inspirado en MetaPost, pero utiliza sintaxis del estilo C++. Provee un estándar para componer tipográficamente figuras matemáticas. Está orientado a las matemáticas (por ejemplo, rotación de vectores mediante multiplicación compleja, y usa el método simplex y dibujo diferido para resolver restricciones generales entre objetos de tamaño fijo (etiquetas y puntas de flechas) y objetos que tienen que escalar con el tamaño de las figuras. Asymptote generaliza en forma completa los algoritmos de construcción de caminos MetaPost a tres dimensiones, compila comandos en código de máquina virtual para velocidad sin sacrificar la portabilidad, y el lenguaje mismo implementa comandos de gráficos de alto nivel, permitiéndoles que sean adaptados fácilmente a aplicaciones específicas.
