Wilt

Wilt es una novela cómica del escritor británico Tom Sharpe, publicada originalmente por Secker and Warburg en 1976.

Argumento

La novela se centra en el personaje que le da título: Henry Wilt, un profesor desmoralizado y minusvalorado que enseña literatura a alumnos desmotivados en una "Escuela de Artes y Oficios" del sur de Inglaterra. Humillado y acosado por su mujer Eva, físicamente poderosa pero mentalmente inmadura, Henry Wilt fantasea con la posibilidad de asesinarla mientras pasea a su perro. Cuando Eva conoce al matrimonio Pringsheim, una pareja extravagante de estadounidenses, Wilt se verá envuelto en una farsa policiaca que le enfrenta al comisario Flint, convencido de que efectivamente ha asesinado a su esposa, arrojándola entre los cimientos de la ampliación de su escuela.

Recepción

Considerada generalmente como la mejor novela de Tom Sharpe, Wilt está llena de situaciones cómicas cercanas a la farsa, personajes inverosímiles, giros argumentales inesperados y bromas de tipo sexual. La novela ridiculiza el estereotipo de la educada sociedad británica, y plantea la idea de que por debajo de su fachada de represión late un mar tumultuoso de engaño y anarquía sexual.

Adaptaciones y secuelas

En 1989 la novela fue adaptada al cine, con el título de Wilt en Reino Unido y Australia, y The Misadventures of Mr. Wilt en Estados Unidos. También se ha adaptado en dos ocasiones al formato de audiolibro, una vez en versión abreviada para HarperCollins, leída por Andrew Sachs, y otra para ISIS Audio Books con voz de Nigel Graham.

Tom Sharpe ha publicado una serie de secuelas a la novela original, entre las que se encuentran Las tribulaciones de Wilt, ¡Ánimo, Wilt!, Wilt no se aclara y La herencia de Wilt.
