Augustus Edwin John (4 de enero de 1878, Tenby - 13 de octubre de 1961, Fordingbridge) es un pintor y grabador británico-galés.

Biografia

Augustus nació en Tenby, Gales.

Estudió en la academia de Liverpool y en la escuela de arte de Londres con Ford Madox Brown; se destacó por su talento al igual que su hermana Gwen John, otra artista destacada de la época.

La primer obra de su carrera como artista fue el diseño vigoroso inspirado en Rembrandt. La mayor parte de sus obras fueron retratos, caracterizados de una gran vivacidad y un profundo análisis sicológico. John retrata a muchos de sus contemporáneos célebres, tales como Thomas Hardy, Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, e Isabel II; según la mayoría de los críticos el mejor de sus retratos es el que realizó del poeta galés Dylan Thomas.
Durante la primera guerra mundial, se une al ejército canadiense como artista de guerra y realiza numerosos retratos de soldados de infanteria.

Retratos

Aunque a comienzos de siglo John ganó renombre por sus pinturas y grabados, la gran mayoria de la obra posterior de John fueron retratos, algunos de los mejores fueron de sus dos esposas y de sus hijos. Era conocido por el profundo análisis sicológico que expresaban sus obras, varios de los cuales llegan al extremo de haber sido considerados "crueles" a causa de la verdad que expresaban. Lord Leverhulme se enojó tanto con su retrato que le cortó la cabeza (dado que solo esa parte del conjunto podia ser escondida en su caja fuerte) pero cuando el resto de la pintura le fue devuelto a John por error, se alzaron voces en varias capitales contra tamaño acto de desecración.[1]
