Cohoba

Cohoba es un término que designa a un ritual taíno que se realizaba para consultar o invocar a un cemí. La ceremonia consistía en aspirar el polvo de la semilla del árbol llamado cojóbana, cuya identidad es motivo de discusión. Hay quienes la identifican con el yopo (Anadenathera peregrina), aunque es probable que fuera un término genérico para designar a varias plantas con propiedades psicotrópicas, incluyendo al género Datura y probablemente otras solanáceas.

La cohoba se aspiraba de recipientes rituales que generalmente estaban asociados a algún cemí, de hecho, algunos de ellos eran propiamente recipientes en los que se depositaba la sustancia psicoactiva. Para aspirar el polvo, los taínos se valían de unas pipas con forma de y que se introducían en los orificios nasales.
