Global Environment Facility

El Fondo para el Medio Ambiente Mundial (en inglés Global Environment Facility, GEF) es una asociación global integrada por 178 países, instituciones internacionales, organizaciones no gubernamentales y el sector privado; tiene el cometido de encarar temáticas medioambientales a escala planetaria y apoyar iniciativas de desarrollo sostenible a nivel local. Proporciona fondos para proyectos relacionados con seis áreas principales: biodiversidad, cambio climático, aguas internacionales, degradación de tierras, capa de ozono, agentes contaminantes orgánicos persistentes.[1]

El GEF constituye el mecanismo financiero para una serie de convenciones y acuerdos ambientales multilaterales. Por consiguiente, el GEF asiste a países para que puedan cumplir con sus obligaciones según las convenciones internacionales que hayan firmado o ratificado.
