Se asoció con James Watt, inventor de la máquina de vapor, fabricando la primera máquina y creó las plantas Soho, cerca de Birmingham. Boulton se unió a la Royal Society el 24 de noviembre de 1785.
También fue uno de los pilares de la Sociedad Lunar,[nota 1] que reunía a los industriales, inventores y científicos. Entre los que asistieron mas o menos a reuniones periódicas también se incluyen a Erasmus Darwin, James Keir, Joseph Priestley, Josiah Wedgwood, James Watt, John Whitehurst y William Withering.

- ↑ El nombre de la sociedad provenía de su práctica de organizar sus reuniones en noches de luna llena. Puesto que no había iluminación en las calles, la luz extra en las calles hacía el camino de vuelta a casa más fácil y más seguro.
