Power ballad (balada poderosa) es un estilo de canciones que eran frecuentemente incluidas en los álbumes de rock, hard rock o heavy metal. El estilo fue desarrollado en los años 70, 80 y 90, ha derivado en distintas formas. A menudo hablan de temas sentimentales, como la angustia, la necesidad, el amor o la pérdida. Estas baladas eran muy comerciales, y era común que estuviesen a mitad de los discos, para bajar el ritmo y recordar las anteriores canciones, generalmente rápidas.

Historia

Al principio las baladas fueron creadas por las compañías discográficas para alcanzar los primeros puestos en la lista de los más vendidos. En los principios de la formación del género, los integrantes de la banda las componían de mala gana. Sin embargo, en los últimos años se han reinventado, y ahora se crean como algo auténtico, no como algo fabricado "a la fuerza". Las baladas de poder eran las canciones que tenían el éxito comercial. Por culpa de su "superficialidad" fueron rechazadas por los críticos musicales. Las baladas de poder originadas en los años 1970 con los grupos de power pop con bandas como The Raspberries y con grupos de rock arena como Styx, Boston, Def Leppard, Queen, y bandas de metal pesado. Un precursor fue The Carpenters con el single "Goodbye to Love" en 1972. En el cual destacó un fuzz-tone que grita el solo de guitarra. Una de las primeras canciones fue "Don't Wanna Say Goodbye", de the Raspberries y "I'm in Love with My Car", de Queen (de su álbum de 1975 A Night at the Opera). En esa época, Kiss obtuvo su más exitoso single con la balada "Beth", de su álbum "Destroyer" de 1976, un tema orquestal y diferente a lo que la banda venía haciendo hasta entonces. En los años 1980, el rock, el hard rock y cintas de heavy metal comenzaron a ascender a la fama mediante las baladas, la MTV mantuvo durante 4 meses "Home Sweet Home" de Mötley Crüe como la canción mas pedida creada en 1985 en el disco "Theater of Pain" que muchos la consideran la balada por excelencia. Otro ejemplo fue el de Scorpions, que tras su gran éxito de su canción Still Loving You, incluida en su álbum "Love at First Sting", comenzaron a centrarse e incluir más Power Ballads en sus futuros trabajos, y salieron baladas como "Moment of Glory", su famosa "Wind of Change", "Send Me an Angel", "When Love Kills Love" o "Here in My Heart". Para algunos grupos de los 70 las "baladas de poder" ayudan a reavivar sus carreras en los 80.

Formato

Normalmente una power ballad comienza con un teclado suave o la introducción de guitarra acústica. Las baterías pesadas y las guitarras distorsionadas no forman parte de los arreglos hasta el estribillo o incluso más adelante en la canción. Las partes de guitarra eléctrica por lo general suelen usar acordes de quinta o power chords que se sostienen hasta el siguiente cambio de acorde. Los gritos y solos de guitarra melódicos son también puntos importantes de este género. La interacción en todas partes del arreglo entre timbres "limpios" y distorsionados es crucial a la hora de la creación de tensión emocional en la power ballad estética.

Como técnica de marketing

Técnica tanto honesta como plástica, dependiendo del grupo... Algunos la utilizan para vender, y en otros simplemente es una expresión sincera y honesta de sus sentimientos.

A pesar del empujón que suponían las baladas; las discográficas sentían que las lanzaban como sencillo para dar un gran golpe comercial.

Uso en el presente

Las baladas en el presente son usadas aun por grupos como Aerosmith (en "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"), Kiss (en "Nothing Can Keep Me From You"), Ozzy Osbourne (en "Here For You") y Guns N' Roses (en "Street Of Dreams").

De vez en cuando este término es usado por canciones que empiezan lentas y silenciosas y comienzan a crecer, como es el caso de "We are the Champions" de Queen. Estas canciones encajan estéticamente, pero no contienen el sentimentalismo que contenían las baladas auténticas. Sin embargo estas son muy aptas para el baile, debido a su tempo moderado.
