Protein Data Bank

El Protein Data Bank (PDB) (Banco de Datos de Proteínas) es una base de datos en 3-D sobre estructura de las proteínas y ácidos nucleicos. Estos datos, generalmente obtenidos por Cristalografía de rayos X o Resonancia Magnética Nuclear, son enviados por biólogos y bioquímicos de todo el mundo. Están bajo el dominio público y pueden ser usados libremente.

Historia

Fundado en 1971 por los Drs. Edgar Meyer y Walter Hamilton del Brookhaven National Laboratory, la gestión fue transferida en 1988 al Research Collaboratory for Structural Bionformatics (RCSB). Rutgers University es la sede principal y esta actualmente dirigido por Helen M. Berman.[1]

El Worldwide Protein Data Bank (wwPDB) consiste en organizaciones que actúan como centros de depositado, procesado y distribución de los datos PDB. Los miembros fundadores son RCSB PDB (EE.UU.), MSD-EBI (Europa) y PDBj (Japón). El grupo BMRB (EE.UU) se unió al wwPDB en 2006. La misión del wwPDB es la de mantener un único archivo Protein Data Bank de datos de estructuras macromoleculares disponible gratuita y públicamente para la comunidad global.

Crecimiento

Cuando se fundó, el PDB contenía tan sólo 7 estructuras de proteínas. Desde entonces ha experimentado un crecimiento aproximadamente exponencial en el número de estructuras y nada parece indicar que el ritmo vaya a decaer.

El ritmo de crecimiento del PDB ha sido analizado en profundidad en diversos estudios.
