Los tanques Rinoceronte eran modificaciones artesanales de los M4 Sherman estadounidenses usados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El dispositivo fue inventado por el sargento Curtis G. Culin del 102º Escuadrón de Reconocimiento de Caballería de la Guardia Nacional a consecuencia del combate del Bocage.

El sargento Culin tuvo la idea de aprovechar las defensas antitanque que los alemanes habían plantado en las playas de Normandía para incorporarlas a la parte frontal de su tanque y así atravesar los bocage. Con ese dispositivo se equipó al 60% de los tanques del I Ejército antes de la Operación Cobra.
