Por ley del Congreso, es la Marcha Nacional de los Estados Unidos de América.
Historia
En su autobiografía, Marching Along, Sousa escribió que compuso la marcha en la Navidad de 1896. Acababa de enterarse de la reciente muerte de David Blakely, entonces director de la Banda de Sousa. Sousa iba en un ferry a Europa en ese momento, y fue allí cuando compuso la marcha. Escribió las notas al papel a su llegada a Estados Unidos. A pesar de que llevaría a cabo actuaciones de la misma en casi todos los conciertos hasta su muerte, sólo un registro de una performance de Sousa, en 1909, se sabe que han sobrevivido hasta hoy.
