El término bantú se refiere a cualquier individuo perteneciente a los más de 400 grupos étnicos de pueblos melanoafricanos que hablan lenguas bantúes que viven al sur de una línea que va desde Duala (Camerún) hasta la desembocadura del Yuba (Somalia). No comprenden un tipo racial ni una cultura uniformes. Sus creencias son animistas, salvo las de aquellos grupos cristianizados o islamizados. Históricamente el complejo lingüístico-cultural bantú procede de una expansión bantú reciente durante el primer milenio de nuestra era.

Los bantúes están divididos en cuatro grupos principales. Entre los más característicos figuran, de norte a sur, los fang, bakuba, baluba, lingala, bakongo, hutus, baganda, kikuyus, tongas, bechuanas, hereros, swazi, sotho, zulúes y xhosa.

Lenguas bantúes

Son una familia de lenguas africanas no camito-semíticas, constituida por gran número y variedad de subgrupos, a la que pertenecen las lenguas del África central y del Sur, a excepción de las lenguas joisanas, habladas por pueblos como los hotentotes y los bosquimanos. Las lenguas bantúes, globalmente consideradas, carecen de unidad, pero tienen algunas características comunes, como el que sus palabras terminen siempre en vocal. Entre los grupos lingüísticos bantúes con mayor entidad destacan el zulú, el sotho, el suajili, el chona o el lingala.
