Bart D. Ehrman es un erudito sobre el Nuevo Testamento y experto en el paleocristianismo. Recibió su Ph.D y Magíster en Divinidad del Seminario Teológico de Princeton donde estudió bajo Bruce Metzger. Actualmente es el jefe del Departamento de Estudios Religiosos en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill. Fue presidente para la Región Sudeste de la Sociedad de Literatura Bíblica, y trabajó como editor de un número de publicaciones de la Sociedad. Actualmente, coedita la serie «Nuevo Testamento, Herramientas y Estudios».

Mucho de la obra de Ehrman se ha focalizado en diversos aspectos de la tesis de Walter Bauer, según la cual el cristianismo fue siempre diferente o disparejo. A menudo se considera a Ehrman como un pionero al conectar la historia de la iglesia primitiva con las variantes textuales dentro de los manuscritos bíblicos y al acuñar términos tales como «cristianismo proto-ortodoxo». En sus escritos, Ehrman se ha avocado a la crítica textual. A partir de que desde los tiempos de la patrística, hubo herejes como Marción que fueron acusados de intervenir los manuscritos bíblicos, Ehrman especula que con frecuencia fue la ortodoxia la que «corrompió» los manuscritos, alterando el texto para promover puntos de vista particulares. Ha escrito o contribuido con diecinueve libros.

Ehrman tiene dos hijos: una hija, Kelly, y un hijo, Derek. Se casó con Sarah Beckwith (Ph.D., King’s College London).

Ehrman se convirtió en evangélico durante su adolescencia. Asistió al instituto bíblico Moody y al Wheaton College, donde se graduó de Licenciado en Letras (Bachelor de Arts), en 1978.

Su deseo de conocer las palabras originales de la Biblia lo llevó a la crítica textual, lo que socavó su fe en esta como la palabra infalible de Dios.

En la actualidad, Ehrman se considera a sí mismo como agnóstico.
