Robert James Lee Hawke (Bob) AC (* 9 de diciembre de 1929) fue primer ministro de Australia desde 1983 hasta 1991 siendo el que más tiempo permaneció en el poder de los pertenecientes al Partido Laborista Australiano.

Después de una década como presidente del Australian Council of Trade Unions (Organización sindical austriliana, entró en política en la elecciones federales de Australia de 1980 convirtiéndose en Primer Ministro tres años después y ganando cuatro elecciones federales consecutivas.

Biografía

Robert James Lee Hawke nació en Bordertown (Australia del Sur). Su padre era ministro de la Iglesia congregacional y su tío, Albert Hawke, un alto dirigente del Partido Laborista Australiano (PLA) y primer ministro de Australia Occidental entre los años 1953 y 1959. Creció en Perth, estudió Derecho y Economía en la University of Western Australia y posteriormente accedió a la Universidad de Oxford.

En 1947 se afilió al partido laborista australiano. Hawke fue desde 1970 presidente del Consejo de sindicatos australianos.

Entró en política en las elecciones generales de 1980, donde resultó elegido parlamentario.

Primer ministro

En 1983, tres años después de su entrada en política fue elegido primer ministro, convirtiéndose en el número veintitrés de la historia de Australia, permaneciendo en el cargo hasta 1991. La recesión económica mundial de finales de los años ochenta y los altos tipos de interés de esos años pusieron en graves apuros el gobierno de Hawke y en 1991 el comité directivo del Partido laborista australiano decidió sustituir a Hawke por Paul Keating como jefe del partido y como primer ministro.
