.root es un dominio de primer nivel de Internet que se sabe que existe, pero del cual nunca se ha dado una explicación a su propósito. Aparentemente parece creado y mantenido por VeriSign, empresa que tiene en su poder algunos de los servidores raíz del servicio DNS de Internet y que además construye el archivo de zonas de nivel raíz usado por el resto.

La única entrada en esta zona es vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root, que consiste en un registro TXT con la palabra plenus, que en latín significa ‘lleno’ o ‘completo’. Quizás sea un marcador del fin del fichero.

La existencia del dominio de primer nivel .root puede verificarse desde la línea de comandos de un sistema estilo Unix ejecutando:

dig vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root. any @a.root-servers.net

Y en un sistema MS DOS, ejecutando:

nslookup -type=any vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root
