Situación de las diez ciudades (en color negro)

Por el nombre de Decápolis (Griego: deka, diez; polis, ciudad) fueron conocidas un grupo de diez ciudades situadas en los confines orientales del Imperio romano, en las actuales Jordania, Israel y Siria.

Las ciudades

Los nombres de las diez ciudades se conocen gracias a Plinio el Viejo.[1] Eran las siguientes:

  1. Gerasa (Jerash), en Jordania.
  2. Escitópolis (Beit She'an), en Israel, la única ciudad al oeste del río Jordán.
  3. Hippos (Hippus o Sussita), en Israel.
  4. Gadara (Umm Qais), en Jordania.
  5. Pella, hoy llamada Tabaqat Fahl, en Jordania al este de Irbid.
  6. Philadelphia, hoy en día Ammán, la capital de Jordania.
  7. Dion.
  8. Canatha (Qanawat).
  9. Raphana.
  10. Damasco, la capital de Siria.
