Fue editado por Sir William Smith y ocupa tres volúmenes y 3700 páginas. Está considerada como una obra de las obras clásica de lexicografía del siglo XIX, y está relacionada con el Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities de Smith y el Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography.
