Alan Smithee, Allen Smithee, Alan Smythee, y Adam Smithee son seudónimos que suelen asumir los directores (y en algunos casos otros trabajadores del gremio cinematográfico) cuando, por alguna razón, no quieren aparecer en los créditos de cierta película. Alan Smithee es el anagrama de "The Alias Men".

El primer caso documentado de utilización de éste seudónimo data de 1967, aparentemente durante la filmación del western "Death of a Gunfighter" sus directores Robert Totten y Don Siegel (quien había dirigido en 1956 el clásico "Invasion of the Body Snatchers") sufrieron un típico caso de "diferencias artísticas" y el resultado fue que ninguno quiso hacerse cargo de lo que había filmado, lo que los obligó a buscar un reemplazante: el mítico Alan Smithee (el nombre fue sugerido por el sindicato de directores).

De todos modos no está del todo claro esto, porque "Death of a Gunfighter" se estrenó en 1969 (curiosamente fue bien recibida), un año después del estreno de Fade-In, film romántico dirigido por Jud Taylor y atribuido al Sr. Smithee.

Anécdotas. Este personaje lo han usado para la comedia ya que hay un episodio de los Simpsons en donde ven un video que está dirigido por Smithee.
