John Birks Gillespie (Cheraw, Carolina del Sur, Estados Unidos, 21 de octubre de 1917 - Englewood, Nueva Jersey, 6 de enero 1993), Dizzy Gillespie, trompetista, cantante y compositor estadounidense de jazz.

Gillespie, con Charlie Parker, fue una de las figuras más relevantes en el desarrollo del bebop, jazz latino y del jazz moderno. Fue durante toda su vida un incansable experimentador de música afroamericana, lo que le llevó a experimentar con el jazz latino, colaborando con percusionistas como Chano Pozo, el calipso, la bossa nova o a colaborar con músicos externos al mundo del jazz, como Stevie Wonder.

Biografía

En sus primeros años como instrumentista trabajó con las grandes bandas de Cab Calloway y Earl Fatha Hines, mientras que en 1945 colaboró con el saxofonista Charlie Parker, con quien grabó algunas de los más revolucionarios temas de la historia del jazz. Se conocieron en Kansas City, en una habitación de hotel y no pudieron dejar de tocar, como dijo Dizzy sobre ese encuentro: "teníamos ideas gemelas y era difícil distinguir lo que provenía de mí de lo que venía de él". De ese encuentro nacía el bebop, con recordados espectáculos en el bar Minton's. Las carreras de Parker y Dizzy, siguieron caminos separados: mientras el primero era inigualable en pequeñas formaciones, Gillespie ofrecía lo mejor de sí frente a grandes formaciones. Mientras Parker sufrió la marginación, Gillespie se convirtió en una de las figuras más conocidas del jazz. Su fama se acrecentó con su fuerte personalidad y sus espectáculos personales entre los que se destaca su habilidad para el scat, los instrumentos de percusión centro americanos y sus apariciones públicas entre las que se destaca su postulación a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos en 1964

Por otra parte, fue unos de los principales responsables creadores del llamado jazz afrocubano junto a Machito, Chano Pozo entre otros, por lo que sobrepasó las fronteras estadounidenses y se internó en la música mundial rápidamente.
