Se conoce por drapetomanía (del griego δραπετης (drapetes, "fugitivo [esclavo]") + μανια (mania, "locura") a la supuesta enfermedad que padecerían los esclavos negros del siglo XIX, consistente en unas "ansias de libertad" o expresión de sentimientos en contra de la esclavitud. Fue acuñada en 1851 por el médico Samuel A. Cartwright, perteneciente a la Louisiana Medical Association.

Se trata, pues, de un caso de racismo científico, típico de épocas donde se aceptan presupuestos sociales sin base empírica demostrable (tal y como ocurrió con la inclusión de la homosexualidad como una enfermedad, hasta que la OMS aclaró el error).

El diagnóstico apareció en un artículo publicado en el New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal donde el Dr. Cartwright argumentaba que la tendencia de los esclavos a tratar de escapar de sus captores o dueños era en verdad un desorden médico necesitado de estudio. Añadía además que con "el consejo médico adecuado y estrictamente seguido, esta práctica podría prevenirse".

Cartwright, asimismo, describió otro tipo de desorden, la Dysaethesia Aethiopica.
