La encíclica Aeternis Patris (subtitulada Sobre la restauración de la filosofía cristiana conforme a la doctrina de Santo Tomás de Aquino) fue publicada por el Papa León XIII el 4 de agosto de 1879. En ella, el Papa afirma que la doctrina Tomista, desarrollada por Tomás de Aquino, ha de ser la base de toda filosofía que se tenga por cristiana. Con ella, el Papa dio el apoyo incondicional de la Iglesia Católica al neotomismo, promoviendo la aparición del neoescolasticismo.

Junto con las otras 84 encíclicas escritas por León XIII durante su pontificado, forma parte del impulso realizado por el Papa con el fin de acercar la Iglesia Católica a los problemas de su tiempo en multitud de ámbitos: el social (Rerum Novarum), el filosófico (la propia Aeternis Patris), el político (Au Milieu Des Sollicitudes y Notre Consolation)...
