Ezra fue un líder religioso judío que vivió en el cuarto siglo a.C. en Babilonia y Jerusalén.

Restituyó a la la comunidad judía después de su exilio en Babilonia, persuadiendo a las personas de la Judá a volver a una estricta observancia de la Ley de Moisés. Prestó servicio como comisionado del gobierno persa, el cual fue tolerante con otras religiones pero necesitaba orden y autoridad.

Sus esfuerzos indujeron a la restauración de la veneración tradicional en el reconstruído Templo de Jerusalén y la disolución de todos los matrimonios mixtos. Por crear una comunidad judía basada en la Ley, la cual existe sin condición de estado político, Ezra es con frecuencia considerado el fundador del Judaísmo moderno. Su historia es dicha en los libros de Esdras y el Libro de Nehemías.
