Albert Bruce Sabin (Białystok, 26 de agosto de 1906 - Washington D. C., 3 de marzo de 1993), virólogo nacionalizado estadounidense, nacido en Polonia en 1906. De origen judío tuvo que huir en 1921 del antisemitismo y llegó al Hospital Infantil de Cincinnati (Estados Unidos) en 1939. Allí vio los terribles casos de niños atacados por la poliomielitis y la estudió, descubriendo que su forma de contagio era por vía oral. stacy

Jonas Edward Salk había inventado una vacuna contra los tres tipos de virus de la poliomielitis; pero tenía el inconveniente de que era intramuscular. Sabin desarrolló una vacuna vía oral que se suministraba a los niños en un terrón de azúcar. Comenzó a utilizarse en 1957.

Sabin declinó beneficiarse económicamente de su descubrimiento.

Parece insignificante, pero el que la administración sea oral en vez de con una inyección hace muchísimo más fácil su aplicación masiva y, gracias a ello, esta terrible enfermedad tiene los días contados.
