Por lo general, "hardtops" no tienen parantes centrales.

El Hardtop ("techo rígido") era originalmente un tipo de carrocería de automóvil en la que el techo se podía remover. A diferencia de otros descapotables, estos modelos tienen un techo completamente rígido, y no se puede almacenar en el maletero.

De estos Hardtop convertibles hay dos variedades: los Detachable Hardtop (descapotables), y los Retractable Hardtop Roofs (retráctiles).

Surgen además los cupés y sedánes sin parantes (pillarless hardtop), automóviles que se asemejan a un descapotable por no contar con pilares "b", o laterales centrales, por lo cual el techo descansa en los del parabrisas y en parte de la carrocería trasera. Esto se nota fácilmente al abrir las puertas con las ventanillas abajo, que no tienen un "marco" que rodea el vidrio cuando está arriba, sino que los vidrios cierran directamente en el techo.

A mediados de los años 70's, dadas las nuevas regulaciones de seguridad para automóviles en Estados Unidos, se hizo muy difícil hacer automóviles tipo hardtop, por lo cual dejaron de construirse en este país, quedando sólo algunos modelos de BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota y Nissan como representantes posteriores de este tipo de vehículos.
