Harmost es una palabra griega antigua que significa gobernador militar o bien comandante de una guarnición en los territorios ocupados por Esparta. Después de la Guerra del Peloponeso, Esparta había conseguido la hegemonía en Grecia. Ya en la fase final de la guerra habían puesto diferentes guarniciones en Polis estratégicamente importantes para asegurar su lealtad. Las harmosts estaban formados por neodamodes, mercenarios y periecos. El sistema de Harmosts estaba en ocasiones apoyadas por el establecimiento de oligarquías en las respectivas polis. Fue importante el sistema de guarniciones en la Guerra de Corinto y en la campaña en Asia de Agesilao II

El sistema de guarniciones y de harmosts espartano decayó por el año 390 a. C.

Los tebanos también usaron ese término .
