High school (literalmente: escuela alta o escuela elevada, en español "escuela secundaria" o "escuela preparatoria") es el nombre de la última etapa en la educación obligatoria, posterior a la enseñanza primaria, cursada en los siguientes países: Australia, Canadá, Corea, Estados Unidos, Filipinas, Hong Kong, Irlanda, Israel, Malasia, Mauricio, Nepal, Nueva Zelanda, Reino Unido, Singapur, Sudáfrica y República Dominicana ofrecido por diferentes colegios que promulgan la cultura estadounidense.

En Estados Unidos

Los estudios que se imparten en el high school consisten en los últimos cuatro años de la enseñanza obligatoria, y reciben la denominación de 9º (noveno), 10º (décimo), 11º (undécimo) y 12º (duodécimo) grados. Los alumnos de cada uno de estos cursos se conocen como freshman, sophomore, junior, y senior, respectivamente. Normalmente, los estudiantes terminan el último curso a la edad de 18 años.

La tasa de graduación, o el número de estudiantes que reciben su diploma de high school, es del 90%, con la excepción de algunas zonas urbanas y regiones atrasadas del país.

Tras conseguir el diploma de high school, el estudiante puede continuar su educación, ingresando en una universidad y cursando estudios superiores. Los estudiantes que no consiguen este diploma, pueden examinarse posteriormente tras completar su formación y así conseguir un certificado de competencia académica de educación secundaria, o GED que les puede servir para ingresar en la enseñanza superior.

En países hispanohablantes

A este tipo de institución académica, en España se la denomina Instituto de Educación Secundaria (IES) en la enseñanza pública y colegio en la enseñanza privada y en Chile se le denomina EM (Enseñanza Media). En Argentina se denomina escuela secundaria o Polimodal, si bien hay muchos colegios de carácter bilingüe que implementan el sistema high school, producto de la inmigración británica del pasado siglo, y en México se le conoce como Preparatoria o Bachillerato.
