Joab

Joab es, en la Biblia, el capitán de David desde la batalla contra Isbaal, hijo de Saúl.

Joab, cuyo nombre significa Yahveh es padre, aparece en el Libro de los reyes. Se trata del hombre de confianza de David, probablemente incluso emparentado con él por su mujer, Sarvia. También aparece en el II libro de Samuel, cuando en el capítulo 24 les es encargado el Censo con David y que culmina con la terrible ira de Dios que mata a setenta mil hombres. (II Sam.24, 1-15)

Aunque en la revuelta de Absalón se pone de su parte y es quien intercede ante David por su hijo, es él quien finalmente lo mata en la batalla por el trono de David. Además también asesinó a Abner, capitán de Saúl y más tarde de su hijo Isbaal y a Amasa, capitán de Absalón para recuperar el favor de David.

Cuando diversos bandos se enfrentan por la sucesión de David, él escoge el partido del mayor de los hijos vivos del rey, Adonías, en contra de Salomón y junto a Abiatar. Por ello Salomón mandó que lo matara al capitán de mercenarios Banayas, quien le sucede en su cargo.
