Su Sobrenombre es Yama-chan (山ちゃん?).
Su esposa es Mika Kanai (también conocida como Mika Yamadera,su nombre de casada) ,una popular seiyū ,ambos trabajaron juntos en el anime Soreike! Anpaman.
El es mejor conocido por sus trabajos como Ryoga Hibiki en (Ranma ½), Cheese (Soreike! Anpanman), Ryōji Kaji (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Togusa (Ghost in the Shell), y Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop).
