Letchworth es una ciudad inglesa situada a 55 kilómetros de Londres en el condado de Hertfordshire. Construida por los arquitectos Barry Parker y Raymond Unwin e inaugurada en 1903 por Ebenezer Howard, fundador de la asociación Garden Cities Association, se constituye como la primera ciudad-jardín. En la actualidad, esta ciudad cuenta con 33.000 habitantes.

En sus inicios, a pesar del apoyo de la prensa, la First Garden City Company no consigue reunir la cantidad de dinero necesaria para llevar a cabo el proyecto, puesto que sólo consigue por medio de acciones un dividendo de 40.000 libras esterlinas frente a las 500.000 esperadas. Por ello, los terrenos se arriendan de la misma manera que se hizo en Londres en la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y en el siglo XVIII para la expansión de la ciudad por el West End. De este modo se consigue poblar la ciudad aunque no se consiga crearla según el modo de financiación ideado por Howard en el que tras recibir una casa y unos terrenos, los ciudadanos están obligados a unos pagos mínimos que van a parar a gastos de la comunidad.

Las personas que se instalaron en Letchworth fueron por lo general gentes de clase media, intelectuales, pequeños industriales y artesanos.
