En tiempos de la antigua mesopotamia, los mitos cuentan que Alû, fue un demonio al que le gustaba la oscuridad y el silencio, probablemente un Utukku. Generalmente se le representaba como forma de perro, a veces sin ojos, oídos, o boca. En la parte de informática es el último componente de la CPU que entra en juego. La ALU es la parte inteligente del chip, y realiza las funciones de suma, resta, multiplicación o división. También sabe cómo leer comandos, tales como OR, AND o NOT. Los mensajes de la unidad de control le dicen a la ALU qué debe hacer.
