María Neira

Maria Purificación Neira González (1962, La Felguera, Asturias) es una médica española, miembro de la OMS.[1]

Biografía

María Neira estudió medicina en la Universidad de Oviedo y realizó sus estudios de especialización de endocrinología en Francia. Ejerció la medicina con Médicos sin fronteras, en Centroamérica. Más tarde se trasladaría con la ONU a Mozambique y Ruanda. Ingresó en la Organización Mundial de la Salud como directora del departamento de Prevención y Erradicación de Enfermedades Infecciosas. Tras ésto, en 2002, fue nombrada presidenta de la Agencia Española de Seguridad Alimentaria, trasladándose a Madrid.[2] Pocos años después regresó a Ginebra para continuar su trabajo en la OMS, ya como directora del departamento de Salud Pública y Medio Ambiente.[3] En el año 2006 fue condecorada por el gobierno francés con la Órden del Mérito Nacional. En 2009 acompañó a la directora de la OMS, Margaret Chan, para recoger el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Cooperación Internacional.

María está casada con el italiano Salvatore, que trabaja en Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados (ACNUR), y tiene un hijo.[4]
