Esta es una subfamilia que agrupa a las ballenas jorobadas:

Ballena Jorobada (Megaptera novaengliae): otros nombres: Ballena Jubarta, Rorcual Jorobado, Humpback Whale. Características: cuerpo robusto. Cabeza ancha y redondeada, tubérculos carnosos en región dorsal y maxilar inferior. Aletas pectorales robustas con bordes anteriores festoneados, alcanzan los 5 m de longitud (hasta un tercio de la longitud del cuerpo).

Aleta dorsal pequeña de forma triangular, sobre una joroba o giba, situada en el tercio posterior del cuerpo. Aleta caudal ancha y con bordes posteriores aserrados. Color gris oscuro a negro en el dorso, vientre blanco, aunque existe una gran variación en estos patrones de coloración en las diferentes poblaciones. Aletas pectorales y aleta caudal con coloración variable, desde el blanco hasta el negro en forma homogénea. Presenta 14 a 35 pliegues en la garganta que se extienden hasta la región genital. Con 270 a 400 barbas en cada mandíbula superior, negra a verdosa, de hasta 60 cm de longitud. Alcanza 11 a 16 m de longitud. Peso de 35 t.
