Portalegre es una ciudad portuguesa, capital del Distrito de Portalegre, en la región del Alentejo y subregión del Alto Alentejo, con cerca de 25 800 habitantes.

Es sede de un municipio con 446,24 km² de área y 25 980 habitantes (2001), subdividido en 10 freguesías. El municipio limita al norte con el municipio de Castelo de Vide, al nordeste con Marvão, al este con España, al sur con Arronches y Monforte y al oeste con Crato.
