El Premio Grammy por Mejor Interpretación Metal ha sido entregado desde 1989. En los años 1992 y 1994 el premio fue presentado como Premio Grammy por Mejor Interpretación Metal con vocalista.
La designación de que es heavy metal y que es hard rock puede ser algo arbitraria; hasta el momento, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, y Soundgarden han ganado premios en ambas categorías.
