El Red Ball Express fue un complejo sistema logístico creado por los Aliados para abastecer a las tropas que avanzaban por Europa tras el Día-D. Este convoy duró sólo tres meses, del 25 de agosto al 16 de noviembre de 1944. Este día, las instalaciones portuarias de Amberes estaban ya listas para su uso. El término Red Ball se refiere a todos los convoys logísticos de la guerra en Europa por parte de historiadores y veteranos.

Los ferrocarriles en Francia se habían destruido por la acción de los bombardeos previos a la invasión con el fin de privar a los alemanes de su uso. Esto dejaba al camión como único medio de enviar suminstros al frente. Tras alcanzar el Río Sena había 28 Divisiones aliadas en el frente. En las ofensivas, cada división gastaba unas 700t de material diarios, 20.000 toneladas en total. Red Ball movilizó unos 6.000 vehículos, que llevaban unas 12.500 toneladas al día. Al mando de esta gigantesca operación se encontraba el coronel Loren Albert Ayers, conocido como "Pequeño Patton," que asignaba dos conductores por vehículo.

Para que las mercancías fluyeran sin retraso, se abrieron dos rutas desde Cherburgo hasta el centro avanzado en Chartres. Se utilizaba la ruta del norte para llevar los suministros al frente, y la del sur para traer vehículos vacíos. Estas carreteras estaban cerradas al tráfico civil. Los convoyes grandes iban escoltados por sendos jeeps, delante y detrás.

Naturalmente, estos convoyes eran objetivo de la Luftwaffe. No obstante, para 1944, su fuerza era ya tan reducida que era raro ver aviones alemanes atacando a los camiones. Los problemas a que se empfrentaban era el mantenimiento, encontrar conductores y la falta de sueño por unas jornadas agotadoras. El 75% de estos cunductores eran Afroamericanos.
