Un Ring fort es una asentamiento fortificado. Los Ring forts se hicieron para proteger villas, principalmente en la Edad Media. En Irlanda se pueden encontrar muchos fuertes de este estilo, son también conocidos como ráth, caiseal, cathair y dún según diversas fuentes irlandesas.

Un ráth (anglizado en rath), estaba hechod de tierra, un caiseal(noroeste de Irlanda) anglizado en cashel) y cathair (suroeste de Irlanda) estaba hecho de piedra. Un dun era una construcción más elaborada, siendo el asentamiento de un gobernante.
