Un trilithon (o trilith) es una estructura que consta de dos grandes piedras verticales (postes) el apoyo a una tercera serie de piedra horizontalmente en la parte superior (dintel). Comúnmente utilizados en el contexto de monumentos megalíticos . Los trilithons más famosos son los de Stonehenge en Inglaterra y las que se encuentran en los templos megalíticos de Malta, que son Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO .

Etimología

La palabra Trilithon se deriva del griego (griego: Trilithos, 'tres,' ‘piedra’)? y fue utilizado por primera vez por William Stukeley.

Otros usos

El término también se describen los grupos de tres piedras en las tumbas Hunebed de los Países Bajos y los tres enormes piedras que forman parte de la pared del templo romano de Júpiter en Baalbek, Líbano. Lejos de Europa y el Oriente Medio, otro famoso trilithon es el Haamonga Maui en Tonga, Polinesia.
