En la mitología griega Penia era la daimon que personificaba la pobreza y la necesidad, siendo por tanto odiada y marginada por todos los hombres.

Era compañera de Amekhania (el desamparo) y Ptokhenia (la mendicidad), siendo lógicamente sus daimones opuestas Pluto (la riqueza) y Euthenia (la prosperidad).

La única filiación que se le conoce la darían los órficos, que decían que nació de la protogenica Thesis, dando a entender, pues, la antigüedad de la pobreza.

Platón relata románticamente que cuando terminó una fiesta en honor a Afrodita a la que habían acudido todos los dioses, Penia acudió para pedir las sobras. Poros, el daimón que personificaba la oportunidad y el ingenio para actuar, habiendo bebido demasiado se había tumbado en el patio para descansar. Penia creyó por la pose de Poros que se hallaban en la misma situación, y creyendo haber encontrado un semejante, quiso tener un hijo con él. De su unión nació el Amor, que si bien siempre sigue a Afrodita por haber nacido en su casa en un día a ella consagrado, en muchas ocasiones se reviste de pobreza y vaga por las calles. Como su padre, atenta contra la riqueza y el bienestar, haciendo que los hombres se peleen unos contra otros.

Es en la mitología romana Egestes o Paupertas.
